What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is a cosmetic procedure also known as a blepharoplasty. It is one of the most common types of cosmetic surgery performed in the U.S. today. Around 100,000 people go through this operation each year.

Eyelid surgery reshapes the eyelid and the tissue around the eyes. Surgeons may recommend it to patients to eliminate puffiness, improve drooping of the eyelids, remove bags under the eyes, improve eye vision, and repair birth defects and injuries to the eyelids.

A blepharoplasty is performed with either IV or general sedation. It is done as an outpatient procedure. During the surgery, your doctor will make an incision along the crease of your eyelid to remove excess deposits of fat, tissue, and skin. The placement of the incision is designed to conceal it after the surgery is finished and your face is healed.

After the surgery is finished, the incision will be closed with either sutures or surgical skin glue. Most patients can go home to recuperate within a few hours after their eyelid surgeries are completed.

Eyelid Surgery Benefits

Eyelid surgery can offer you a number of benefits that can make the procedure worthwhile. Many patients who have undergone a blepharoplasty note that it is fast and simple. Most procedures can be performed in under an hour.

Further, there is no need to stay overnight in the hospital. After you awaken from anesthesia, you can typically return home within a matter of hours. Most patients also experience little pain afterward. While there will be swelling and bruising, your pain should be minimal. You may find relief by taking over-the-counter medications.

Finally, eyelid surgery provides fast and permanent improvement of the appearance of your eyes. The results of the surgery can last for years without having to be retouched or improved.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

After you are cleared to go home, it will be important for you to follow your doctor’s post-care instructions. To start, you may be advised to use cold compresses and lubricating ointment on your eyelids to ease swelling, bruising, and itching.

You should also avoid going out in direct sunlight while you are healing. The sun can damage the skin on your eyelids and around your eyes. If you do go outside, you should wear sunglasses and a high UV sunscreen. Your recovery period should last from 10 days to two weeks.
